19th Annual Days of the Dead Community Celebration

Join us as the Oakland Museum of California comes alive for the 19th annual Community Celebration for the Days of the Dead. Craft activities, tasty food, dance and music groups, colorful ofrendas, and ceremonia bring the community together for this healing tradition. Watch demonstrations of traditional Mesoamerican arts and cooking, and buy Days of the Dead merchandise by local artisans for your home altar from our mercado.

During the celebration, don't miss the chance to visit the special exhibition, The Tree of Life and Death: Dias de los Muertos 2013, on view in the Gallery of California Natural Sciences from October 9 to December 8, 2013. The Mesoamerican tradition of Dias de los Muertos is associated with iconic elements-sugar skulls, marigolds, colorful ofrendas-arranged or created to honor deceased loved ones. This fall, OMCA's 19th annual Dias de los Muertos exhibition is guest curated by renowned muralist Eduardo Pineda. Installations by guest artists fuse the themes of life, death, and mourning with ecology, focusing on topics including indigenous knowledge, empathy, habitat and species loss, and accountability for preventing such losses through conservation and action.

All Days of the Dead Community Celebration activities are included with Museum Admission.

The 2013 Days of the Dead Celebration and The Tree of Life and Death: Dias de los Muertos 2013 are made possible in part by generous support from Kaiser Permanente and the Oakland Museum Women's Board.

OMCA is located one block from the Lake Merritt BART Station. Parking in the Museum Garage is $1 per hour with Museum validation.
