      Honoring Aging Parents

Parents are the focus of a pair of moral demands made by the Torah: to honor (Kavod) and to revere (Yir’ah). What exactly does honor and reverence look like in the care of an aging parent by an adult child? Through the study of traditional texts we will try as a group to find possible answers to such questions as: How do adult children balance responsibilities to aging parents and their own young children? What can an aging parent ask (or oblige) of an adult child? Does the "type" of parent affect the obligation of the adult child?

This will be a text-based discussion. All texts will be provided in their original (Hebrew or Aramaic) language and in English translation.

Aviv Matzkin teaches at at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School during the week, and at congregations Etz Chayim and Kol Emeth on weekends. He is a graduate of South Peninsula Hebrew Day School.
