Continuous Insulation and Combustibles in Exterior Walls: Code Requirements for Fire Life Safety (1 HSW)

      Presentation Description

The Building Code severely limits plastic foam and combustibles in exterior wall design. This creates issues with wall designs meant to improve energy efficiency using exterior continuous insulation, or façade aesthetics with composite metal panels or other combustible veneers.  Further, the next Code will prohibit certain combustible weather barriers used in standard construction.  The presentation explains Chapters 14 and 26 and NFPA 285 testing.  Additionally, Mr. Markman will highlight changes in the upcoming 2013 California Building Code.

      Learning Objectives

      ·                     Understand Code limits for combustible materials within non-combustible exterior walls.

      ·                     Learn about required testing for non-listed assemblies.

      ·                     Understand the 15-minute thermal barrier and when is it needed for exterior insulation.

      ·                     Highlight upcoming changes in the 2013 CBC that expand the requirements for exterior wall testing.

      Presenter Biography

David Markman is a Professional Engineer at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc.  David has worked on a diverse array of projects including investigations of code-deficient passive fire protection systems, code analysis, investigations of defective walls and roofs, and design of blind side waterproofing and roofing.  David’s project experience involving both the water- and fire-resistance of exterior walls gives him a unique understanding of the developing issue of the code requirements for combustible materials within non-combustible walls.
