Darwin’s Atoms: New Ceramic Works by Susannah Israel

Opening Reception: Thursday June 6th, 6-10pm

The SMAart Gallery & Studio is pleased to announce its June exhibition:  Darwin’s Atoms, new ceramic works by Susannah Israel. Relating the timelessness of human connection to that of the earth, Susannah Israel sees emotions like atoms: persisting over time and becoming rearranged but never destroyed. Her introspective figures contemplate this as they blend into their own personal landscapes. Her archetypal figures recall those of ancient Egypt and indigenous art with little hints of modern objects and expressions link past and present.

The works in Darwin’s Atoms were conceived out of Israel’s intensely personal interpretation of the enduring connection of love. Israel states, “traveling alone recently from California to Montana, I experienced poignant sorrow and profound solace in the configuration of the terrain, remembering the same journey that Bill Lassell and I had made ten years ago, newly in love”. The piece Apostrophe* begins the series, representing the figure in terms of geography and calling upon a sense of the landscape inhabited by memory.  For more information on the artist please visit
