      With Held

The life of an artist may appear full of glamorous openings and adoring admirers. But what lurks behind the facade? Marriages gone sour, unsure steps up the ladder, the death of companions, jealous contemporaries, all leading to an unsure future. The play traces the artists' progress in the art world, while failing in a number of personal relationships, driven onwards on nothing but a suspicion that art has become his only saving grace. Jeremy Julian Greco is a San Francisco based actor, director and writer. He wrote The Thrilling Adventures of Elvis in Space and The Thrilling Adventures II: Elvis Rex, which both premiered at the San Francisco Fringe Festival. Excerpts of With Held have been performed at Ever Gold Gallery, as part of an art show featuring the artist, John Held Jr, Tell it on Tuesday, Monday Night at the Marsh, CouterPulse's Words First, Salon San Carlos and at the Marin Fringe Festival, where Greco won a Best Actor award for his portrayal of John Held Jr. San Francisco artist and writer John Held, Jr. has authored "Mail Art: An Annotated Bibliography" (1991) and "Rubber Stamp Art" (1999); contributed to "Dictionary of Art" (Grove, 2000) and "At a Distance: Precursors to Art and Activism on the Internet (MIT, 2005); lectured at the V&A Museum (London, 1991) and the Museum of Communications (Berlin, 2004); organized exhibitions at the National Palace of Fine Arts (Havana, 1995) and the Mayakovsky State Museum (Moscow, 2003); Held is currently a staff writer for San Francisco Arts Quarterly. He co-curated the exhibition "Gutai Historical Survey and Contemporary Response," at SFAI in February-March 2013. John Hamilton (producer) is a playwright and a producer. His original works have played to many San Francisco bar-rooms and Tenderloin stages, including Motel Cowboy (New Langton Arts, 2005) and Stetson Manifesto (SFIFF 2007). He has produced several shows with playwright Jeremy Greco, including Elvis in Space 2 (SFIFF 2006). He most recently co-produced the off-off Broadway revival of The Water Children by Wendy MacLeod in 2012.
