Inside the Black Box: Decision-Making in Modern China (MLF)

Crystal Chang, Ph.D., Lecturer, UC Berkeley

In the year since a new generation of leaders took control in China, in what new directions are they steering that nation, regarding its economy, human rights and relations with the U.S.? Who among the new faces are emerging as key decision-makers, and what are their ties to the various party elders who still wield considerable behind-the-scenes influence? What internal dynamics are in play as China’s leaders make decisions in a rapidly changing environment? Dr. Chang attended university and conducted her dissertation fieldwork in China and worked for two years in business development at an IT company in Shanghai.
