Marius, by Marcel Pagnol, translated and directed by Roland David Valayre, with Alan Badger, Lisa Carlson, Jim Gasperini, Nastassia Maltsava, Nicolas Poler, Nathan Putnam, Matthew Surrence, and Ket Watters. GenerationTheatre première Marius, by Marcel Pagnol, in a new English translation by R. David Valayre. The production runs August 8 through August 25, 2013 at the Southside Theatre, Fort Mason Center. Curtain time is 8:00pm Thursday through Saturday, and 3:00pm on Sunday. GenerationTheatre's production of Marius is sponsored by Fort Mason Center as part of its annual arts festival, Fort Mason Center Presents, and benefits from the support of Berkeley's famous restaurant Chez Panisse, named after Panisse, one of the play's characters. Marius is the first play in Marcel Pagnol's celebrated and heart-warming "Marseille Trilogy," comprising Marius, Fanny, and César. Together, the three plays tell the story of a small bar on the Old Port of Marseille. In the endearing style of Pagnol's dramas (My Father's Castle, Manon of the Spring, The Baker's Wife, etc.) the Trilogy invites us into the cycles of love, heartbreak, and joy that fill the lives of now famous characters. "All French kids and all Francophiles have a soft spot in their heart for Pagnol's characters," says GenerationTheatre's Artistic Director, David Valayre, who also directs Marius. "It is fitting that Marius, the story of a young man pulled 'as if by a rope' toward the sailing ships and the sea, should open amidst the America's Cup celebrations on the Marina Green." To celebrate the Mediterranean, GenerationTheatre will offer its Marius audience a Provençal evening at Fort Mason Center's Southside Theatre now the company's permanent home. With the collaboration of the French Consulate, the Alliance Française of Berkeley, and French and local sponsors, the Southside Lobby and the House will open one hour before curtain for vendors, music and presentations about Provence, Pagnol and Marius. Audience members will even be able to learn pétanque.
