A Night with Haroon Mirza and Okkyung Lee

Tonight’s performance highlights the improvised collaboration between acclaimed experimental cellist Okkyung Lee and artist Haroon Mirza. Combining video material, electrical signals and the cello, Lee and Mirza will draw from their repertoire while continuing to build on their longstanding collaborative relationship.

      About the artists

Okkyung Lee is a cellist, composer and improviser who moves freely between of artistic disciples and contingencies. A native of South Korea, Lee has taken a broad array of inspirations — including noise, improvisation, jazz, Western classical and the traditional and popular music of her homeland — and used them to forge a highly distinctive approach. Since moving to New York in 2000 she has worked in disparate contexts as a solo artist and collaborator with creators in a wide range of disciplines. She has appeared on more than 30 albums including “Cheol-Kkot-Sae (Steel.Flower.Bird)” released by Tzadik and “The Air Around Her” with Ellen Fullman and released by 1703 Skivbolaget. She is currently producing a debut album of her Yeo-Neun Quartet with harpist Maeve Gilchrist, pianist Jacob Sacks, and bassist Eivind Opsvik that explores the lyrical side of her writing.

Haroon Mirza is a London-based artist who creates installations that test the interplay and friction between sound and electromagnetic waves. He devises sculptures, performances and immersive installations that asks us to reconsider the perceptual distinctions between noise, sound and music. Dipping into disciplines such as design, music, architecture, particle physics, neuroscience and theology, Mirza questions the boundaries of human experience. Recent solo exhibitions include Haroon Mirza: The Night Journey at the Asian Art Museum as well as solo shows at Ikon, Birmingham, U.K., and at Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen. His work was included in the 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale in China (2012) and the 54th Venice Biennale (2011), where he was awarded the Silver Lion. In 2018, Mirza unveiled Stone Circle, an outdoor sculpture commissioned by Ballroom Marfa, in Texas, which will remain in the landscape for five years.
