THE POET AND THE DREAMER: REVERIES OF POSSIBILITY IN A DESTITUTE TIME

The poet John Keats advised us to call the world the vale of soul making, for then, he added, you would know the use of the world. Today such advise falls on deaf ears. In the destitute times in which we live, nature is inanimate, soul is dismissed as a fantasy, we are well along the way to becoming cyborgs, and the gods have disappeared, taking with them any sense of the sacred as a boundary that frames our human condition. Jung’s psychology offers another way and Robert Romanyshyn will discuss soul-making in terms of the following ideas and will provide examples to illustrate them: The Orphic roots of Jung’s psychology have importance for both the poet and the psychologist. Psyche as image and metaphor as the language of the image – recovering the poetic realism of the world, both in the landscape of the dream and in the dream as the possibility of possibility. Working the dream in terms of soul-making requires a change of mood, including reverie and the subjunctive feeling state of the dreamwork itself. Finally, we will consider dreamwork as theater, shifting from dream interpretation to dream enactment. Ultimately we will demonstrate the way in which a dream that is embodied is like a poem read aloud.   ROBERT D. ROMANYSHYN, PHD is an Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and an Affiliate Member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. The author of seven books and articles in psychology, philosophy, education and poetry journals, he has given lectures and workshops at universities and professional societies in the U.S., Europe, Australia, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand. He is currently finishing a new book, The Frankenstein Prophecies: The Untold Tale in Mary Shelley’s Story/Nine Questions and Replies
