SF/Marin ACNL May Chapter Meeting featuring Dr. Anita Hunter

Please join the SF/Marin Chapter of ACNL for our monthly meeting, an excellent opportunity for nurse leaders to network, enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and drinks, and hear from a nursing expert on a current hot topic. This month, we are proud to feature Dr. Anita Hunter, PhD, APRN-CPNP, FAAN as she presents a talk titled "International Nursing and Research: Application to Practice".

Dr. Anita Hunter is Chair of Nursing at Dominican University of California. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner and has been involved in international nursing experiences since 1995 in Ghana, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Uganda. She is  a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and has been actively involved with the national organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty and the International Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Practice Nursing Network.

International nursing supports the nursing stateside because of the ability for participants to further develop their cultural responsivity and competence; fluency in working with interpreters; and the ability to establish effective cross discipline collaboration and to negotiate political and religious barriers. The work that has been done in Uganda since 2007 has impacted the community of Mbarara while striving to maintain the cultural traditions and the autonomy of the people with whom we have worked. The research done by Dr. Hunter is specific to finding how to address the environmental and resource causes of preventable health problems and the unfortunate health consequences that occur while trying to value the beliefs and practices of that community; as well as coming to terms with the what can and cannot be done to make a difference in the lives and well being of people in a destitute country. Along with malnutrition, chronic anemia, severe malaria, severe infections, and developmental delays, Dr. Hunter's team have uncovered heavy metal contamination (specifically arsenic) in all the water sources. Such water contamination can also be found in the Central and Imperial Valley of California. Future involvement in Uganda and other East African countries will be assessing the water supplies and the resultant health of the people exposed to arsenic and other heavy metals so a culturally appropriate intervention can be developed.

We hope you will join us for this evening of enlightening conversation and networking! See you on the 14th!
