Walking Tour: Weeds in the Urban Landscape at Mills College

In addition to its vast assortment of trees and shrubs, Mills College hosts a collection of weeds and escaped exotics that well represents those found in the greater Bay Area landscape. “Weeds” is a term often used generically and uttered with a dismissive sneer; in fact, weeds comprise a large and varied group of plants, each with its own history and characteristics, many with large bodies of myth and folklore attached to them, and many which have been found useful to humans as food, medicine and fodder. As we encounter these weeds, Richard will tell what he knows about their stories.  Leader: Richard Orlando has taught weed classes for nearly four decades in the Landscape Horticulture Department at Merritt College, a nationally renowned horticultural department. He has just completed his opus, Weeds in the Urban Landscape: Where They Come From, Why They're Here, and How to Live with Them, available at local bookstores. He has been accused of having never seen a weed he didn't like, and he is willing to acknowledge that this is almost true. Location: Mills College: the bridge over the creek at the end of the entry drive which comes off MacArthur Blvd. Near the intersection of Richards Road and Kapiolani Road Note: There's a guard kiosk at the entrance, but no need to stop. There's limited parking available along this road; might be a good idea to ask the guard directions to a visitor parking lot.  This event is sponsored by the Oakland Heritage Alliance.
